2001 Personal Account

(Lake Charles, Louisiana) A friend in the National Guard told me his unit included a mechanic with the unfortunate name of Power. Whenever the operators start up a tank, they yell "Power!" to signal to everyone that it's moving. One day Power was working in the cabin of a tank, when someone yelled "Power!" as a signal that they were about to move the turret and close the hatch. Power put his head up through the hatch port to see who needed him, just as the hatch was coming down. Fortunately he was wearing his helmet, which was severely cracked by the closing hatch. He suffered minor trauma to the head and several bloody lacerations, but he remained good-natured about the whole thing -- and never again stuck his head up when he heard his name called out. © 1994 - 2020
