Sheriff: Motorcycle passenger attacked by bison at Custer State Park Makenzie Huber Sioux Falls Argus Leader
The week-long event, one of the largest Harley Davidson motorcycle rallies in the U.S., draws hundreds of thousands of Harley enthusiasts who show off their bikes, talk shop, purchase souvenirs and biking accessories and tour the scenic Black Hills surrounding Sturgis.
A motorcyclist visiting Custer State Park on Wednesday almost died after approaching a bison, but she escaped serious injury — because her pants fell off, authorities say.
The Custer County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a woman being "gored" by a bison around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday along Iron Mountain Road in Custer State Park, according to a news release from the Custer County Chronicle and shared on the Custer County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page.
The incident occurred while thousands of motorcyclists are in the Black Hills for the 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
In an update on Thursday afternoon, the report stated that the 54-year-old Iowa woman escaped serious injury and wasn't actually gored during the incident.
Witnesses told authorities that the woman got off a motorcycle and attempted to approach a bison calf. Before she reached the calf, an adult bison charged at her, the release states.
Its horn caught her belt and jeans, dragging her as it ran and swinging her around violently.
She was saved when her pants came off and she fell to the ground unconscious. The bison returned to the herd after she fell.
Visitors to Custer State Park should stay in or on their vehicles and keep a safe distance from bison, the sheriff's office advised.
Custer County Sheriff's deputies, Custer State Park rangers, Custer Ambulance and Black Hills Life Flight responded to the incident.
