Charles Darwin with a purple swarm around his head, contemplating the twist of fate that natural selection sidestepped these still-living honorable mentions.

2014 Honorable Mention

Next Prev Random Honorable Mentions have misadventures that stop short of the ultimate sacrifice. Nevertheless we salute the spirit of their colossal blunders with an Honorable Mention. Better luck next time!

Turbine-ator
2014 Honorable Mention
Unconfirmed by Darwin

(May 2014, El Salvador) Adam was in vacation paradise, swimming in a pool at the base of a waterfall halfway up a beautiful El Salvador mountain. The pool was an artificial concrete basin. Adam dove from a rock and floated blissfully downstream, face down and carefree. Suddenly the current became swift and he surfaced in time to realize he was about to be carried into a narrow tunnel! Adam grabbed the edge of the concrete tunnel and pulled himself out of the water, and in doing so he saved the life he had so casually risked--the tunnel led to a hydroelectric power plant for the valley below! Had he been sucked into the turbine, Adam would have been in for quite a change -- from matter to energy.

A near miss, a self-reported Honorable Mention--

we'll be keeping our sights on Adam!
