Calais man dies after setting off fireworks from atop his head

Police say it was the first fireworks-related death in Maine since they became legal in 2012

By J. Craig Anderson Staff Writer canderson@pressherald.com | @JCraigAnderson | 207-791-6390

A Calais man was killed Saturday night after placing a fireworks mortar tube atop his head and setting it off, the first fireworks-related death in Maine since they became legal in 2012, according to Maine State Police.

Police said the bizarre incident occurred at roughly 10 p.m. in a residential backyard on South Street. Devon Staples, 22, was setting off fireworks with some friends when he “placed the fireworks mortar tube on top of his head and set it off,” the investigation found.

Investigators said Staples the explosion caused a fatal head injury, and he died instantly.

Staples had been drinking with friends prior to the fatal incident, police said, adding that was the first death attributed to fireworks since they became legal in Maine in January 2012.

Fire investigators also say there were injuries from private fireworks incidents last night in Friendship, Jefferson, Lebanon and Woodstock that involved burns and eye injuries. A list of those incidents are being compiled by the state Fire Marshal’s Office, but no details are expected until later today, according to police.

Despite how common fireworks-related injuries are I think this one is worthy of consideration. It takes a remarkable level of stupidity, unlike any we've seen in a while when it comes to fireworks, to think it's a good idea to hold one on your head and set it off. Thanks, Sean!
