Gender Blender

2015 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

This story highlights the dangers of playing with kitchen appliances. For the sake of anonimity we'll refer to this person as "Sheldon".

Being a hater of vegetables and following advice to improve his diet, Sheldon purchased a small blender.

A few weeks later, he hit a problem. While using the blender, it suddenly failed to turn off. Faced with a fast spinning razer tipped propeller blade in a plastic container, the best course of action available was apparently to try to force the lid off. (I know a number of readers are thinking the plug socket would have been a safer alternative).

Back to Sheldon, stood in front of the still spinning blender, trying to force it's lid off, wearing nothing but an open dressing down and some boxer shorts. After much effort, the lid popped off. With no lid in place, the fast spinning propeller did what propellers do best. It rose into the air out the blender.

At this stage, Sheldons place in the gene pool was saved only by his own hand, deflecting the blade and sustaining a 2 inch cut across it, before the blade landed on the floor, nicking his lower leg on the way down. The cut might otherwise have removed him from the gene pool.

Unbelievable that his first thought wouldn't be to unplug it but to try to open it up. It suffices as a PA for me. Thanks.

I'd like to know more details, such as what kind of blender he was using. Every blender I've ever had or seen had an arrangement that made it impossible for the blades to come out; the blades are on a base that is sandwiched between the base of the pitcher and the screw-on base that fits into the motorized part, along with a rubberized seal. For this to happen either the blades themselves would have to come loose from the base, or it was a blender that didn't use this simple safety arrangement. (Plus the lids were extremely easy to get off at any time.) Now, if it were a food processor, it would make more sense. Thanks anyway, and submit again.

I thought the same thing as Bruce...you'd think he would have unplugged it first! Thanks!
