A Fisherman story

2015 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

45 year old Manoel M. R. was enjoying the hot Sunday afternoon, fishing with his friends and family at this beautiful beach, when he spotted some fishes trapped in a small pool in the sand and decided to, again and to everybody´s dismay, pull off his signature stunt: hold by the tail with his teeth a living fish inside his mouth. But this time he failed to observe some safety precautions (did he ever?) as he played with the extremely slippery sole fish.

Manoel had a passion for fishing and the sole is very common and well known in that region, also he failed to grab the fish several times before succeeding, due to the fish´s super smooth skin, so it was not for lack of warning nor knowledge. But he did´nt give up and after the exhibition, when he opened the mouth to remove the fish... it raced down his throat.

Manoel would still get a chance though. As the small fish lodged in his stomach, it would, hypothetically, have soon passed out and simply turned into nothing but an extreme sashimi (Wow, what a story to tell other fisherman! And this one would have dozens of witnesses!) and the remains would exit the man´s body in ordinary physiological fashion.

But the man panicked.

Deprived of most of his presence of mind, literally scared to death, Manoel kept attempting to induce vomit by ingesting lots of water, which probably extended the fish´s life in the process and badly hurting himself. One of his last words was that he could feel the fish shaking in his stomach. He even managed to drive to the nearest hospital and walked to ER, where he kept drinking water, and throwing up blood. The nurse reprimanded him, telling that he would end up choking. Seconds after her premonition, the fish erupted, this time getting stuck in his trachea Time was up and his body completely deprived of his spirit.

He is survived by his wife, and two children that we hope possess the fully functional "Why?" gene.
