hiker dies in extreme cold

2015 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Winter blizzard approaching, (some of the coldest winds, temperature and weather conditions on Earth, comparable to Mt. Everest) and the departed set out at 5:00 am BY HERSELF, dropped off by her husband. She was planning on not only summiting Mt. Madison, NH, but the 3 more of the highest mountain peaks in the Northeast, including Mt. Washington. Her husband was going to pick her up at 5pm the SAME DAY! This is hike would take at least 2-3 days in the summer, let alone the winter (the coldest, snowiest winter of recent history in the Northeast). She activated her emergency beacon, after summiting the first Peak, on her way to the second (Mt. Adams). This area is above tree line and is basically a rock ridge between the peaks. Darwin award: She could still be alive if she just went back down after reaching the first peak.

The absolute lack of research and regard for weather concerns kicks this into the Darwin category for me! Thanks!

The article says nothing that I can see about her attempting to hike all these mountains in one afternoon. Despite that, she certainly should have known better if she was such an adventure junkie. Mount Washington is extremely well known for its extreme weather, especially during the winter. It's the site of the second highest wind speed ever recorded, at 231 mph. The Mount Washington observatory website strongly discourages people from hiking there during the winter.
