Sugar Baby Loses Her Sweetness

2015 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

This story was told to me by a friend of mine, "Caitlin", who was a fellow EMT. It's never to my knowledge been reported in any publication, so it'll have to remain a Personal Account.

They had a frequent flyer in her town; Caitlin called her "Sugar Baby" for the sake of confidentiality. Melissa had a problem with hypoglycaemia. A serious problem with hypoglycaemia that she was very well aware of. Trouble is, she didn't take it seriously. Oh, she had plenty of warnings.

Whenever Caitlin and I got together or talked on the phone, she might say "Sugar Baby played chicken again." This would mean that the ambulance service had been called and arrived to find Sugar Baby sprawled in her driveway next to her open car door. Or across her front steps. Or just inside her front door. She had felt a bit dizzy in her last moments at work, perhaps, and decided "I'll drink some orange juice when I get home," rather than addressing the situation immediately. And then she would pass out on her own threshold and be found with blood glucose levels at 22, or 19, or 18. (One dies at 15-16.)

This happened at least a dozen times, and those were just the calls that Caitlin was on. You could almost hear the good forces of the Universe calling out to Sugar Baby: "Take this seriously!" But instead she listened to a still, small voice that whispered to her: "It's okay, you can make it home, drink some juice, eat a peanut butter sandwich, and you'll be right as rain."

But alas, one sunny day in 2003, Sugar Baby lost her last game of chicken. She left work, feeling dizzy, and headed home, where she collapsed on her front walk and died.

All of which would mundanely, if depressingly, stupid, not worthy of the notice of Darwin, except for the many advance warnings … and the seemingly minor matter of the nature of her work.

Sugar Baby was a registered nurse. She worked at a hospital, on a ward that kept a stock of graham crackers and orange juice for precisely such eventualities. She routinely tested patients' blood sugar, and counselled those with precisely her own ailment to eat something to boost their blood sugar at the first sign of hypoglycaemia.

Given that she was an RN and worked in a hospital she certainly should have known better. Thanks, Arkadia!

Holy... and this sounds like Type 1 diabetes, which is far more fatal if you let things slide, which she certainly should have known in her profession! Thanks Arkadia!
