Trucker killed by falling pipe

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A delivery driver was killed this afternoon when an industrial pipe rolled off the trailer of his 18-wheeler and landed on him in east Harris County, sheriff's deputies said.

The man, whose name was being withheld, died at the scene about 12:30 p.m. shortly after he brought a load of heavy pipes to Basic Equipment, 7215 Miller Road No. 2, deputies said.

Most of the employees were having lunch when the driver, who did not work for the company, pulled into the pipe yard. As he started to loosen the safety straps, a worker advised him to wait until the load could be secured with a crane, deputies said.

"The guy said, 'Don't worry. I've got it,'" said sheriff's Lt. John Legg.

A 7,800-pound pipe then rolled off the trailer and landed on the man, officials said.

The worker who had asked the man to wait was taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pains.

"He was very shaken up," Legg said.

Truck drivers should definitely be aware of the possibility of their loads shifting during transport and taking care when unloading. This guy certainly should have known better. Thanks for sending this in.

"Don't worry. I've got it." That ranks right up there with, "Hey, watch this!" I feel sorry for the worker who _warned_ the idiot and had to go to the hospital. I hope he's okay. I'd hate to toss such a great story 'cause of Bystanders Hurt. Thanks, Mb!

Darwin Awards III: Survival of the Fittest

Hardback. 304 pages. Autographed.
$15
The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!

123 new stories, 18 full-page illustrations, plus discussions of transgenic animals, the origin of life, and more.
