PERRY, N.Y. (AP) — A western New York man has died from injuries suffered when he was shocked by a 35,000-volt power line while trying to steal copper wire from a utility substation.

Police in Wyoming County tell WHEC-TV that 36-year-old Andrew Mower of Perry and a 24-year-old man broke into a NYSEG site last Thursday in Mower’s hometown, located 35 miles southwest of Rochester.

Officials say Mower climbed onto a transformer and grabbed a 35,000-volt line. He was thrown to the ground and his clothing burst into flames. Police say the other man put out the fire and carried Mower outside.

Mower died at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

The other man is being held in the county jail.
