In older cars (thing 1960s and earlier), the steering wheel could be removed by prying off the horn button and removing a nut. One of the games our driving instructor played while he was a young man was to have a carload of friends in a car where the steering wheel retaining nut had been removed. During a drive, remove the steering wheel, pass it around the car, replace it and make a correction or a turn, repeat until done with drive.

His point was that he lived through it, but it was an incredibly stupid thing to have done.
