Save the SUV

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Cadets Luis Espire (age 18) and conscript Alan Álvarez (age 20) from "Lt. Edmundo Andrade" Military Academy (Sucre, Bolivia) drowned on November 20th while they were trying to retrieve an SUV -belonging to a Captain of that garrison- from the flooded stream of Quirpinchaca river. The dead bodies were found 10 miles away from the site.

I recommend a honorary award to Lt.Col Álex Baldiviezo, who acknowledged both young soldiers as "heros" due to their courageous action.

A video and news from Bolivian media is available at: http://www.paginasiete.bo/sociedad/2013/11/20/video-cadete-conscripto-mueren-arrastrados-sucre-6500.html

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
After watching that video I'm more than willing to give these idiots the nod. What on earth did they expect to do when the water was spinning the SUV around like a kids toy? I'm surprised we didn't see any of them getting crushed by the SUV as it spun them into the banks of the river. Thanks for sending this in!

I don't know. Were they *ordered* to do it, at pain of losing their jobs or more severe punishment? If so, the blame lands on the officer who ordered them into that situation. If they chose to do it to try to get brownie points, then it's a Darwin.

There is no way any officer would "order" anyone to do this sort of thing. My best guess is that they "volunteered" (for brownie points, &c...save the Captain's car, go to the head of the class). It is the same principle as leading a frontal assault against hopeless odds for no reason other than personal glory...!
