Collage Student miss-read the signs

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

19-year-old (Fanshawe College student) Mate Magdic unsuccessfully attempts to cross the closed Blackfriars Bridge in London Ontario Canada.

You'd like to believe that a collage student is capable of reading the signs stating "Bridge Closed", "No Pedestrian Traffic", and the " ".

Perhaps the 11 foot high plywood blockade that only extended a meager 1 foot out from either side of the bridge would be some indication that the bridge is closed.

Apparently the odd and dangerous looking steel tube scaffolding that surrounds the bridge isn't some indication of potential danger either...

Nope, none of this matters in the dead of night to a teenage student. Obviously, all those signs are for other people... and so Mate went through all kinds of hassle to get around the barriers just to fall to his death. Mate was found the next day high and dry on the land.

Unfortunately some people working for the city licked lead paint off the walls one too many times, and so the barrier will be extended a further 3 feet... (I kid you not!)

Of course several of Mate's family is now talking about how this is the city's fault...

(I guess the apple had to fall from a nearby tree, eh?)

So in all seriousness, how can people like that be saved from their own stupidity??? - Should the city hire armed guards/police? - Or extend the barrier again and again, every time this happens? - Or just pull down the barrier and let those human-lemmings hybrids leap whenever they wish?

Sorry, if what I wrote seems callous and I was sympathetic to the family, until I heard they blame the city!!!

Have a look at the photos of the bridge before the 3foot extensions and decide for yourself.

People were climbing around the barricades so workers made the barricades bigger, but that doesn't deter people like this guy? Sounds like a winner in my book. Thanks for sending this in!

To quote one of my other favorite websites: "Those signs are for other people!" That attitude leads to almost as many Darwins as "Hold my beer and watch this." Thanks!
