Do-It-Yourself Bunjee

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A tedious car trip gave Luis Abarca the time he needed to decide just how to spice up his family's shopping junket to the Costa Rica-Panama border free zone. So, they took a break at a bridge over the Río Grande de Térraba, where Luis made his valiant attempt at do-it-yourself bungee jumping.

After tying one end of a rope to his ankles and waist and the other end to their car's bumper, he climbed over the bridge railing and suspended himself in mid-air over the alligator-infested river. Then one of his relatives (name withheld to protect the stupid) proceeded to back the car up towards the railing until daredevil Luis was inches from the water.

Not content with this simple stunt, Luis and his nearly-as-idiotic family members had the driver pull away from the railing and then back the car up again repeatedly, turning our hero into a human yo-yo. This fantastically fun family activity continued until the rope broke, plunging Luis headfirst into the murky river.

Whether Looney Luis knew how to swim or not is unknown, but being semi-hogtied as was our heroic Darwin Award Candidate, even an Olympic swimmer would have had a tough time surviving this test.

Apparently even the alligators were laughing so hard at Luis' stunt that they let his body float on by, where it was found 48 hours and two miles farther downriver.

(Veracity Note: This a true story, first published on Page 17 of the 6/10/13 edition of La Nación (www.nacion.com), Costa Rica's largest-circulation daily newspaper, complete with a picture of rescue workers in boats searching for Looney Luis' body. There was a follow-up story on 6/11/13 regarding the discover of the body, quite decomposed but free from alligator bites.)
