The most deadly game... of catch.

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Football players are known for many things. Their strength and coordination are among them. However, intelligence isn't usually one of them.

Bruce Walker, a defensive lineman for the New England Patriots, doesn't help matters any. Like all football players, he made sure to get a lot of practice in to help keep his reflexes handy.

One can only assume he was practicing his catching skills in a most unique fashion when he incurred a stab wound in his chest while he and a friend were throwing a steak knife at each other in a grocery store parking lot.

Police said that Walker, who played at UCLA, suffered the wound when he missed a catch. He was treated at Southwood Community Hospital in Norfolk and required several stitches, police said.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound nose tackle responded that he was puzzled by the interest in the incident, saying "nothing happened."

Police said Walker provided few details about how the incident occurred or who his knife-tossing friend was.

Hopefully he and his "friend" will have learned the basic fundamental consequences of tossing sharp blades directly at other people.

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
I'm a bit of a Pats fan but never heard this story about the former football player. Luckily I was able to find a brief newspaper blurb about it so I'm more than willing to accept it (and since I also couldn't find a duplicate in the archives). Thanks, Joseph! Here's the article I found: http://goo.gl/iwGX6
