Almost Crossbow lobotomy

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Having recentely buying a pistol crossbow, my friends and I decided to have a play with it in the back garden shooting bolts into whatever seemed like a good idea at the time. One friend commented on how safe the crossbow was when the safety switch was on.

To prove it was safe. I pointed the loaded crossbow to my temple and after a few pulls on the trigger, the status of 'safe' was given. This was immediately revoked however as I moved the bow away from my temple and brain (the latter is questionable I know), the saftey switch failed and discharged the nice metal tipped pointy bolt straight into the ground amidst great suprise.

A bit of long due common sense was used afterwards to ensure loaded crossbows were not pointed at any parts of our anatomy that we regarded as important.

A good personal account, i believe i'd say this were too common if it were a gun, but I cant recall any crossbow stories. So i will let the other moderators decide!

Definitely Toss: Too Common
I respectfully disagree with Shadow on this. We have a LOT of stories in the archives involving idiocy "proving" a gun is unloaded, the safety is on, etc. The fact that this was a handheld crossbow "pistol" and not a firearm just isn't enough for me to consider it too similar. Thanks just the same.

I have to side with Bruce. My worry is, with no ages or location on this, there's no way to know if the submitter was over 16 at the time. (I don't like to assume.) Thanks anyway, and submit again.

Usually when someone puts a loaded weapon to their head, the results are predictable. In this case, the fellow lived to tell the tale, and I think it makes for a decent personal account!
