Beauty can kill

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Bulgaria, city of Blagoevgrad. “It is good to be on vacation” – at least this is what the 24-years old former rally racer Mario “Nushi” Nushkov thought. Especially when surrounded by beautiful and peaceful nature landscape. During the weekend he was guest at his friend’s villa in the small village of Bistritsa. Suddenly, overwhelmed by the beauty and the serenity he took the decision to make some photos – from some place high enough to capture the entire landscape. Eyewitnesses later reported to the police officers, that the closest “high enough” object happened to be the support pole of hi-voltage power line. Before his friends realized that it wasn’t a joke, Nushi was already on his way up. Once at the top he faced a problem – he needed to hold for something with one hand while filming with the other. The thick power cables were the obvious option – heavy, stable and in range. Later the investigators from the power company determined that he was unable to create a “correct” short circuit, so he wasn’t burned to a crisp in an instance by the several hundred kilovolts in the cable. However the charge he took was enough to kill him instantly, long before the gravity said her word – long word since the pole was almost 20 meters high. The tough landing crushed his spine and probably would have killed him if he wasn’t already dead. Beauty can kill.

We get lots of stories of people electrocuting themselves, typically from trying to steal copper cable or climbing on top of trains. I think this is the first time we've heard of a photographer climbing up a power pylon in order to try to get a good picture. And that's unique enough for me! Thanks, Geo!

"I want a fabulous picture, so I'll climb wayyyyy up this really tall power pole carrying live wires." What was he thinking!? Thanks Geo!
