Copper Thief Sizzled

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

9/13/12: A 50 year old man is dead after apparently trying to steal copper wiring from an Eastside sub-station.

. According to the Allegheny County Medical Examiners Office, Kevin Myers died at 12:53 this afternoon from burns over most of his body.

Myers broke into the Reed Street sub-station around 3:30 Thursday morning, and according to Penelec officials, was attempting to cut copper wiring from on top of a transformer....

A 34,500 volt line comes into that transformer....

Myers was electrically shocked when he cut into one of the lines, knocking him to the ground....

He was able to stumble to a nearby porch where he collapsed.

18 hundred Penelec customers were left without power because of the crime.

Penelec crews have restored power to those customers. - WJET NEWS

You know, at 50 you'd really think he'd know better then to mess with LIVE power lines. Thanks Ralph!
