Officers say the 32-year-old was trying to cut cables inside an excavation pit at Prestons, just after midnight.

They say there was an explosion as the man's battery-powered angle grinder cut through the wires.

He suffered extensive burns, but was able to get back in his car and drive to Campbelltown Hospital.

Police say he was due to be transferred to the specialist burns unit at Concord Hospital.

The man was with a seven-year-old girl and another man, aged 33, who is being questioned.

Police say an electrical supplier was called to repair the cables - which carry 11,000 volts - before the crime scene was handed over to officers.

They say the area had been surrounded by a temporary fence carrying a warning about live cables.
