Credit card Cost him

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. -- An attempt to recover a dropped credit card caused to a 30-year-old St. Catharines man to plunge to his death from a Vancouver suspension bridge, police say.

RCMP Const. Richard De Jong said surveillance video from the Capilano Suspension Bridge shows the man climbing over the bridge railing to retrieve the card around 6 p.m. Saturday.

"He had taken his camera out of his pocket and his credit card fell out," De Jong said Monday. "The video shows him pointing to something and then climbing over the railing. People nearby are warning him not to do it."

De Jong said the man, whose name is not being released by the RCMP at the request of his family, slipped while trying to get to the card and fell 60 metres to his death.

Police said the man was there visiting with his extended family.

Capilano Suspension Bridge spokeswoman Sue Kaffka said the tragedy happened on Cliffwalk, a series of stairs, walkways and viewing platforms attached to the canyon wall.

While we rejected an earlier submission of this story I'm willing to accept this one because it provides a lot more detail. The first submission didn't fully describe the cliff walk so I (and I believe the other moderators) believed it was just a walkway along the top of a cliff, not a series of platforms, etc. attached to the wall of a canyon. If this guy climbed over the side of a walkway suspended to the side of a bridge then he's worthy of an award as far as I'm concerned. Thanks, Adam!

Sorry, Adam, but this still doesn't say Darwin to me. Thanks anyway, and submit again!

I concur with Bruce. A simple call would have gotten him a new card within a couple of days. Instead, he stupidly opts for death. I wonder who's going to pay his final bill??!
