I had better be very careful about this, it needs to be anonymous if published, please. My relationship with a close relative is at stake... She isn't very bright sometimes. Being a doctor, I told her NOT to touch any animals when she went to Turkey because of the risk of rabies. When she had her vaccinations this was discussed again with her.

She found a lovely starving little cat at the Ephesis ruins in Turkey and fed it some meat from her sandwhich. It was so cute, and so hungry, that it took the meat from her fingers, scratching and puncturing her (thankfully not biting her) as it did.

When she came back two weeks later I asked her if she had come into contact with any animals which could have had rabies...I just had that feeling about her, she can be sooooo dumb. I was relieved to hear her answer "No."

It wasn't until 2 wks later when we were sitting in the cinema about to watch a new release I had been desperate to see that she told me... "I saw the doctor yesterday and had my first rabies shot because of the cat scratch in Ephesus..."

Thankfully she was considered low risk and didn't need immunoglobulin (this took 2 days and many phone calls to sort out).

Did I mention my sister is in her late 40s? Not exactly a kid. Who feed wild cats in Turkey meat by hand??? A potential Darwin awardee, obviously!!!

Hopefully she learned something from this experience, if only to toss food to the wild animals and not hand feed them...
