King Brothers Jump Off a Bridge

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

First, the reported article of a current news event:

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20120228/NEWS01/302280006/David-Michael-King-Genesee-River-missing?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Home

State troopers from Batavia and Rochester are using an airboat and a scuba team Tuesday to search for two brothers who may have fallen into the Genesee River.

David W. King, 54, and Michael King, 46, both of Batavia, last were seen at 9 a.m. Feb. 19 on the Interstate 390 bridge over the river, just south of the Scottsville Road exit.

State Police said Monroe County sheriff's deputies stopped David King on Feb. 19 for having been reported as driving recklessly and hitting a guard rail. His car was left on the bridge and deputies took him to Strong Memorial Hospital. He signed himself out before being treated, and Michael King and another brother, Daniel, drove to the hospital and picked him up.

Daniel King drove his brothers back to I-390 and dropped them off. David King's car was on the opposite side of I-390, and Daniel King last saw his brothers as they jumped over the barrier between the northbound and southbound lanes.

That area has an approximate fall of 100 feet into the Genesee River, State Police said. They searched for the brothers by ground and air, using a helicopter, on Sunday.

Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at (585) 398-4100.

---Now, the part not in the article: The bridge is actually 2 parallel bridges, one northbound and the other southbound, and there is a 20-foot gap between the sides. The barrier is a 4-foot high concrete barrier. Daniel and Michael had opportunity to realize this, and it was during daylight hours.

We seem to be getting quite a few of these "falling through the gap" stories, but this one's interesting because of the twisted logic. My wife is from the area, so I've seen this particular bridge, and even I can tell (from a car) how high it is. I've gotten lost on I-390 a few times, and it isn't that far to the next exit where one can head back in the opposite direction! Anyway, it was a shortcut alright...to the hereafter! Thanks!
