According to Surete du Quebec spokeswoman Genevieve Bruneau, a group of young people decided to hook both the sled and the couch to the back of the truck along a rural road in St. Benjamin.

As they were speeding down the road, another vehicle approached from the opposite direction. The driver of that car was unable to stop and struck the couch being dragged behind the truck, killing the 22-year-old man who had been riding on the piece of furniture.

Two other young men who were riding on the sled were not injured, Bruneau said. The driver of the other vehicle was also unharmed.

The 21-year-old male driver of the truck allegedly fled the scene after the impact, she added, but was tracked down by police a short time later. He is facing charges of dangerous driving causing death and leaving the scene of an accident. He remained in custody early Sunday, and was expected to appear in court on Monday.

Both the victim and the accused were from St. Georges de Beauce, Bruneau said.

St. Benjamin is located about 325 kilometres east of Montreal.
