alternative railway propulsion

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

This is an honorable mention since the nominee "just" badly hurt his foot, or feet. It could have been much worse. This individual (male, age 18, from Braz in Vorarlberg (Austria)), was riding in a taxi cab that had to wait at a railway crossing. Our hero got impatient with the slow progress of the train, left the taxi, crawled under the barrier and tried to push the train to make it go faster. He slipped and his feet got in the way of the wheels. His injuries are not specified, just called "very severe", in the report and alcohol involvement was, according to the police, not "looked into".

Mind you, it is possible to keep an empty cargo car moving by pushing, but if that guy got impatient, it must have been a longer train. The very idea to single-handedly make a difference defies description, not to mention that if a train moves slowly, there is usually a reason for it. I have once been a student of railway technology and still keep an eye open for railway incidents, but I think I never came across something like that.

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
While grade crossing incidents are woefully common, I am always looking out for new variations on a tired old theme! PUSHING A TRAIN??? Of ALL the grade crossing incidents we've received (hundreds), this is the first time I've heard of someone actually trying to push a train! What a useless gesture! If it were going THAT slowly, he could have probably rolled under it! Anyway, the stupidity involved is worthy of note! Thanks, Angela!

This guy actually thought he could speed up a train by pushing it? What a maroon! Thanks, Angela!
