A retired Ukrainian won a competition vareniki eaters, a local specialty like a big sweet ravioli, stuffed before he died, on Thursday. The competition was held on Sunday in the city of Tokmak (Zaporijia region, in the southeast), which celebrated its 227th anniversary.

The man, 77 years old "swallowed" Big Ten vareniki, up "a few seconds to his rival," said Viktor Khalamovski, one of the organizers of the competition. The winner received "a pint of cream" as a reward and distributed as if nothing had happened, he said.

"An hour and a half later, I knew he was dead," he added Khalamovski. A specialist in Legal Medicine indicated that the retiree died of suffocation. "He ate too much and vomited, but a piece of dough and blocked his throat," said Serguei Kostiuk, a specialist police.
