Romancing the Bomb

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

At-risk survivor: Some women should not be permitted near explosive objects. In Naperville, Illinois, a woman was walking home when she tripped over a pile of homemade pipe bombs carelessly dumped on the sidewalk. Being concerned that someone would get hurt if the bombs went off, she picked them up and continued walking home. Once there, she threw them into the back of her car and drove to the Glen Ellyn police department and proudly informed the soon-to-be-panicking officers of her good citizen deed. The bomb squad quickly arrived and determined that the bombs were so crude that they probably would not have caused a lot of damage, if they were ignitable (perhaps this is why they were dumped in the first place). The police could not understand why the woman decided to take them to their station, instead of calling the Naperville police about the location of the pile. Needless to say, I think an eye ought to be kept on this woman whenever she's near an explosive, be it a puny firecracker or a grenade. [I apologize for the vague dating, my sense of time is excessively poor.]

... Picks them up, walks around with them, dumps them in her car, drives them to the station.... Oh. My. Goodness. Has this woman her full Darwin yet? Thanks, Thalla!

I was ready to read that the bomb squad cordoned off the car and then blew up the bombs in the back seat because they were so unsafe. Oh well... Thank goodness she didn't injure any bystanders despite her blatant idiocy. Thanks, Thalla!
