Wing Walker falls to his death

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

DETROIT — Federal authorities are investigating the death of a stunt wing walker who fell 200 feet at an air show in southeastern Michigan.

Selfridge Air National Guard Base, which hosted the show, says it's working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate Sunday's death of Todd Green, who was trying to move from a plane to a helicopter when he fell.

Messages seeking updated information on the investigation were left today with the FAA and the NTSB.

The accident happened while Green was flying on a Stearman aircraft during a stunt. He was taken to a hospital and died from his injuries.

The air show at the base in Harrison Township, about 20 miles northeast of Detroit, began Friday and ended Sunday.

The pilot of the airplane has had 3 family members who were all wing walkers die prior to this so he was well aware of the dangers. The fellow who died this time was attempting to grab onto the skid of a helicopter while standing on the wing of the stunt plane, without any safety gear whatsoever. That to me is more than enough to qualify for a DA.

That picture is worth a thousand words! I always wonder what's going through a guy's head at the start of a death fall...anyway, I concur entirely with Bruce. I guess the audience got a rather short show...but WHATTA show...!
