Man dies after car falls from railr

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Posted on Sun, Aug. 14, 2011 Man dies after car falls from railroad trestle at 9th Street and Front Avenue BY ALAN RIQUELMY A 23-year-old Fortson man died early Sunday after the car he was in fell upside down from the railroad trestle near Ninth Street and Front Avenue. Jeffrey Alan Spradlin died after the 1996 Saturn SL2 he was in fell about 12 feet from the raised railroad tracks onto the street beneath, police said. Reports state that Spradlin, in the driver’s seat, got onto the tracks at street level at the intersection of Front and Ninth. It went about 50 yards west before falling off the north side of the tracks and landing on its roof, crushing it. A man inside a nearby Columbus State University building heard a loud crash at 4 a.m., which led him outside. He saw the vehicle laying upside down with Spradlin immobile on the inside. He yelled to Spradlin, got no response and then called 911, police said. Coroner Bill Thrower said the cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head and chest. He is investigating the death as an accident.

I know train and track stupidity is too common, but *driving* on *train tracks* is a whole new level of dumb to me. So many reasons argue against such an occurence! Thanks, and submit again!

I have NO idea why this fellow would drive along railroad tracks for as long as he did. Maybe he liked trains, but perhaps he should have taken up model railroading instead. It's MUCH safer...
