Police: Man electrocuted while tryi

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A scrap metal thief was found dead earlier this week after he was electrocuted atop a utility pole and fell to the ground in the Crestwood Industrial Park in Wright Township, police say.

The decomposed body of Mervin Rohrbaugh, 44, was located on the property of the shuttered Dana Perfumes plant on Crestwood Drive, Wright Township Police Chief Joe Jacob said.

The body was discovered by police Wednesday and had been there since late Friday or early Saturday.

Jacob said it appears Rohrbaugh was attempting to sever a non-energized aluminum line and steal another metal object when he came in contact with a live wire.

"Somehow he came in contact with it, was electrocuted and fell from the pole," Jacob said.

One of Rohrbaugh's tools was recovered atop the pole.

Jacob said it's very unusual for common scrap thieves to try something as risky as stealing metal from telephone poles.

"I don't think this was his first rodeo. This is unusual, climbing poles. Most people go into buildings," he said.

I figure this sort of thing will only stop when future technologies make copper cable obsolete... Thanks!
