Long Jump from a Roof

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

During the summer back in Newark, Ohio, some friends of mine and I decided to play hide and seek on the roof of the Wyeth-Scott building. This is now something else in Newark,on Sisal Ave. between Maple and Hudson. East side of the tracks, right along the railway.

Of course, night is the best time and being this was about mid-July, it was way too hot to sleep around 10PM anyhow.

Being the seeker, I was running around toward the south part of the building, unaware in the darkness that I was headed for a 4 foot drop to the next roof below the one I was on.

Well, one just starts to feel an uncomfortable acceleration, in this case followed by a thump, landing on my chest and face.

After I got over the scare of it all, it was a lot easier to remember the thrill of it all.

So, it was only a good thing to introduce those also unfamiliar with this drop.

A few of the guys were on the football team, natural born runners. I didn't factor this in but rounded up a few of them by being the seeker, trapped them into going toward the drop.

As it turns out, a few already were familiar with it but some others were not.

Well here I am laughing about it with, did I mention, a few football players between me now and my escape route. Did I also mention Wyeth-Scott makes caskets?

Not knowing for sure if I was in danger, I ran off the lower roof and got away from anyone intending a payback.

Well, too young to get a Darwin at 12, or even an honorable mention, it was still not a smart thing to be playing where one could land on an air vent, let's say and really get hurt. Not that smart either to trick people who can outrun you.

Oh well, had a Darwin been earned either by my first fall or the wrath of one of the football players, I was in the right place.

Reading over the Long Jump story and having the 2nd best submission for that one, figured I'd throw this one in.

Thanks for all the humor, perhaps this can also supply people with some laughs.

I think this is worthy of a PA. Running around on rooftops in the dark is pretty stupid in anybodies book. You're lucky the drop was only 4 feet!

Yep. Most of the idiots who get a 'Too Common' vote at least do their jumping in daylight!
