State Police said today in a statement that a trooper responding to an unrelated incident saw Thomas Johnson, 31, of Gardner, and Seth Davis, 34, of Winchendon, lying in the breakdown lane of Route 2 westbound in Shirley just after 10:20 p.m.

The bus driver also called State Police and reported that "someone" had fallen out of the vehicle, according to the statement. The driver called within "several minutes" of the men falling, State Police spokesman Sergeant Matthew Murray said in a phone interview.

Johnson died at the scene and Davis was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where he is in critical condition today, according to State Police.

Johnson and Gardner were passengers on a Colonial Tours of Boston bus, which was returning from a trip to the Redhook Brewery in Portsmouth, N.H. and bound for Gardner, State Police said.

Alcohol is believed to be a "contributing factor" in Johnson's death, according to the statement.

No charges have been filed as of this morning and the incident remains under investigation, State Police said.
