Man falls in lake rescuing toy

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A man who went out on an Ottawa County lake to retrieve his son's remote-controlled helicopter had to be rescued from the icy water by emergency crews.

It happened around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday on at a home in the 8600 block of 24th Ave., on Cedar Lake near Jenison.

Deputies say a teenager was flying the helicopter in his backyard when it went out over the icy lake and crashed. The boy's 37-year-old father went out on the ice -- carrying an inner tube -- to retrieve the helicopter. The father fell through the ice into the water.

When rescue crews arrived, the father had pulled himself onto the inner tube. Emergency workers pulled the man back to shore. He was treated at the scene, but refused to be taken to the hospital.

Deputies warn people that ice on area lakes is becoming thinner as daytime temperatures rise well above freezing.

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
At least this guy was smart enough to bring the inner tube with him. But that still doesn't excuse him from being stupid enough to go out on thin ice in the first place and risk his life over a freaking toy. Thanks, Moon!
