The Barron river flows from the Atherton tablelands behind Cairns in tropical Queensland, Australia to the coast. In the wet season Barron river is a raging torrent. The river falls from the tableland to close to sea level in one drop of 261 metres in a waterfall dropping into narrow Barron gorge. A 29 year old thrill seeker in a kayak chose to try the rapids above the falls after heavy rain made the river particularly challenging. The gorge is so narrow and deep that the police helicopter had difficulty recovering the body. Had they not found it, the crocodiles in the river below the gorge would have done so.

I saw a little of the Barron river when I visited Cairns a few years ago. I can't believe these idiots would rappel into the flooded gorges and try to kayak there.
