Student vs the Drill Press

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

My technology teacher told me a story about a grade twelve student in his technology class who nearly got a drill press put into his head. Despite warnings, the student refused to tie back his long hair when he was using the machinery. The stuudent was using a drill press and was leaning over to look at his work when his hair got caught in the spinning drill bit. The machine sucked the student in by his hair, slamming his forehead against the machine and ripping a large chunk of hair from his scalp. A few centimetres lower and his head would have gone straight into the spinning drill bit. From that day on, everyone in the class tied their hair back before working with a machine.

Sometimes the simplest demonstrations are the most effective. But the teacher still should have been more forceful about it. Thanks, Joshua!

I agree with Bruce! On both counts. In my high school shop class, that kid wouldn't have been allowed anywhere near that machine!
