Shortcut to Oblivion

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

In the early morning hours of December 11, 2010, two soccer players from Lynn University in southern Florida decided to take a shortcut across the New River on some train tracks. A train had just crossed over, so they figured there was little chance of another coming so soon.

As it turns out, a train would be the least of their worries. Right before they reached the other side, the bridge started to rise. Turns out, it was a bascule bridge.

Both students tried to hold on, but one fell into the river. The second student hung onto the bridge's tresles. The one that fell was found underwater 10 minutes later. He was declared dead later that day. The other student was rescued, and treated for back and ankle injuries.

What makes it even more senseless is that the student that died was a three-time ESPN Academic All-American.

I was ready to toss this as being an all too common train/pedestrian collision. Boy was I wrong! Thanks, Jeff!

How the heck could they not tell what kind of bridge it was? Thanks Jeff!
