As floods caused devastation, evacuations and declarations of disaster areas today, a motorist paid a terrible price for taking a risk.

He was seen overtaking a queue of motorists waiting for floodwaters to subside at Denison Creek, Oxford Downs, near Nebo, south-west of Mackay, about 2am (AEST) on Tuesday.

But his car was swept away and authorities were not able to pull the vehicle from the swollen river until 11.30am today.

The body of the man, believed to be aged in his 50s, was inside. A report is being prepared for the coroner.

We often get stories about people who take a calculated risk and fail, but I like this one because this fellow just HAD to cut in front of EVERYONE, come hell or high water. In the end, it was the latter. The moral lesson here is that a "me first" attitude and a lack of patience can be fatal.

Aside from what James said, the linked article described this man as an experienced truck driver. Apparently that experience didn't equate to intelligence when dealing with dangerous situations like floods. Thanks, Sebastijan !
