Trains tracks are for....trains!

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

The part that I think makes this Darwin-worthy is not only the walking on the tracks bit, but hearing the train bearing down on her and deciding it best to remain on the tracks a bit longer...

"An injured Ohio teen says she doesn't remember getting hit by a train while walking along tracks on her way to school. Sixteen-year-old Isatu Kanu says she missed her bus on Friday and decided that following the tracks would be the fastest way to get to Olentangy Orange High School north of Columbus. She told The Columbus Dispatch on Sunday that she heard the Norfolk Southern train behind her but thought it was moving slowly and thought she would be safe. The girl got clipped by the train and wound up with a concussion, a neck fracture and 38 leg stitches. She says she blacked out at the moment of impact and remembers waking up with the engineer standing over her. Doctors expect Isatu to make a full recover."

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
I'm usually the first to argue that train/pedestrian collisions are way too common since we get all sorts of stories of people jogging/walking/whatever on tracks and getting hit by a train. But usually the victim is distracted by an iPod or something else. Willfully ignoring a train behind you because you THINK it's moving slowly enough reaches new heights of stupidity as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for sending this in, David!

She heard the train and stayed on the tracks because she THOUGHT it was moving slowly!? Spectacularly stupid! Thanks David!
