Birthday death dive on Gold Coast Tony Bartlett November 29, 2010 - 11:59AM

AAP

Birthday celebrations for a Gold Coast man have ended tragically when he died trying to dive from a high rise apartment building into a swimming pool.

The man, who is believed to be from Nerang, was celebrating his 32nd birthday on Sunday and dived twice from the first floor balcony of an apartment block at Broadbeach, police said.

On the second attempt he missed, striking his head on the concrete pool surround. Advertisement: Story continues below

It's understood his friends were filming the dive on a mobile phone.

Police were called about 9.00pm (AEST) on Sunday night but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
Thanks, Neil! Had he died on the first attempt, I'd have written it off as too common/bad luck, but I'm voting to keep this simply because he did it TWICE. We all get ONE "Cheat Death" card for any given act of stupidity, but never two!!!

Given that he failed (succeeded?) on his second attempt I think he demonstrated his worthiness for a DA. Thanks, Neil!
