Spray Paint + Oven = BAD

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Deciding to do a little home improvement, a Portland woman chose this cold November afternoon to paint some closet doors. She had already removed the doors and taken them outside but was now faced with the problem that the cold weather would adversely the ability of the paint to flow freely from the can. Now instead of waiting for warmer weather or perhaps moving the job to a well ventilated basement or garage, she decided the best option would be to wamr the cans of spray paint before taking them outside. So, what's the best way to warm cans of highly compressed, highly flammable aerosol paint? Why, putting it in the oven of course.

Predictably, the fire department was soon called to the residence with reports of a kitchen fire. The oven door had been left ajar and when one of the cans predictably exploded, it rocketed out of the oven and through the ceiling igniting a small fire in the kitchen. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found that the homeowner had already extinguished the flames in the kitchen. Further investigation revealed the remains of the spary can in the attic among smoldering debris which was quickly doused.

Obviously the warning labels clearly printed on all aerosol cans simply aren't big enough. Thanks to this woman the warning labels on cans of spray paint will likely have to be made large enough to cover the entire can. Unbelievable! Thanks, Jason!

Setting them on a counter in the kitchen while baking something simply wasn't fast enough, I guess...
