I've been in the Army a couple years now so I don't know everything but I do know that certain things are just plain dumb. During a range where we were shooting .50cal machine guns (anti-material, anti-aircraft) a soldier from another unit decided to do something completely idiotic. He had to link two belts of ammunition together, which is a little difficult with rounds that big. To link two belts together you have to pull the first round out of one belt, put the now empty first link into the last link of the other belt, and re-insert the round you pulled out into the two mated links. It takes some effort but this guy had a way he thought would make it easier. He was having trouble pushing the round back into the links so he pulled out his standard issue multi-tool and start banging on the back of this 6 inch long bullet. One muffled explosion later he had shredded his right hand, lost the tip of one finger luckily he had been wearing eye protection so those were the worst of his injuries.

I've hardly ever handled ammunition and never had any formal firearms training, but even *I* know that pounding on the primer of a shell is the height of idiocy. Thanks for sharing this, David!

My dad's retired military, and I *know* this kind of thing is dumb! And "don't bang on the ammo" is just common sense!
