Comments (2) FREMONT, Neb. -- Fremont police said a pedestrian was hit by a train and killed late Friday afternoon.

Detectives said Melvin Groene, 72, was trying to crawl under a stopped train at the railroad crossing near First and Main streets.

Railroad operators said they didn't see Groene and began to move train forward at about 4 mph. Groene was caught underneath the train and died at the scene, police said.

"I was surprised because I had no idea he would do that," said his wife, Evelyn Groene. "Like I said, I think he thought it was stopped and wasn't going to start again."

Railroad safety guidelines say anytime people are within 10 feet of a train, moving or stopped, they're too close.

While I'm usually the first to say train-related submissions are too common I don't think we've ever received one where the victim crawled underneath the train. Unbelievable!
