Slow Morning Train - Survivors

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin/Wendy says, "Thanks for the submission, but although foolhardy, these two survivors, one ran away and the other was fine, and the worst they did was terrorize the train driver. No, this was dumb but not funny, and it was furthermore a rude thing to do to innocent train personnel.

Train Hits Sleepers in Pickup Published : Monday, 11 Oct 2010, 7:57 AM CDT

By Alice Wolke | MYFOXDFW.COM

FORT WORTH, Texas - Fort Worth police say a man and a woman chose a very inconvenient place to fall asleep early Monday morning.

Investigators say they stopped their pickup truck on top of some train tracks on E. Peach Street near downtown and fell asleep inside.

A southbound Union Pacific saw the truck on the tracks shortly after 2 a.m. and managed to slow down. Despite the blare of the train's horn the two people inside did not wake up.

It was only when the slowly-moving train struck the pickup and pushed it several hundred yards down the tracks that the man woke up, jumped out of the pickup, and ran away.

The woman stayed in the truck, but wasn't seriously hurt, police say.

Officers later caught up with the man and charged him with public intoxication and evasion.

No one on the freight train was hurt.

Definitely Toss: Too Common
Thanks, but train accidents are simply way too common. There are literally thousands every year in the US alone. We get stories involving people walking on tracks, riding bikes/ATV's, etc, sleeping, passed out drunk, even having sex on train tracks and getting hit by oncoming trains.

Yes, such things are too common, but this level of stupidity isn't! Most casualties of this brand of incident are either trying to race the train across the tracks, or are otherwise distracted. What puts this one ahead of the pack is as follows: a) They CHOSE their spot (as opposed to just passing out on the tracks); b) The blare of a train's whistle didn't wake them up (we're not talking just everyday bone-head here); c) They survived...

Since there were two people in the car, there's the possibility that parking there wasn't a mutual decision. We don't know if the woman was already asleep when the driver chose to park there. Thanks anyway, and submit again!

I agree with Candy and Bruce on this one, we arent sure if it was a mutual decision and car vs train is a very sadly common oocurance. Thanks for submitting though

This one really had me laughing! It worries me that so many stories are from my part of the world! Was this mutual consent? That's the rub here. Still, to have not woken up when hit by a train takes the biscuit! Way to go, dude! Ha-ha.
