Mushroom Science

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin/Wendy says, "Thanks for the submission, Anonymous contributor! The scientific aspect of researching which mushroom poisons your body is immune to, well, that is such a foolhardy pursuit that I hardly think that scientific curiosity enters into the picture. Since Mushroom Misadventure Maroons are not so common in the Darwinian literature, this particular variation would be a good one to write into a new Darwin Award. Alas, the media reference is expired. Thus, for now, let us hope that an original source is located, so this can be rescued from the Slush Pile."
ORIGINAL SUBMISSION:

A man in Lithuania decided to make sure whether mushrooms of Amanita genus are indeed that poisonous. Last year, he tried to eat Amanita muscaria. He survived that, decided that it backs his claims about harmlessness of this species and this year decided to repeat his experiment with Amanita phalloides, also known as Death Cap. The man picked one up, cooked and ate it. He was quite happy to feel well in the first day, but died of poisoning five days later.

Definitely Toss: Too Common
I'm at the point where I now consider mushroom poisoning to be too common. If you do a search for "mushroom" in the archives you'll find a lot of very similar stories. Thanks just the same.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
While this sort of thing is becoming a bit more common, there's something about this story which may qualify this as the l;ast DA of its kind. I rather like this fellow's "scientific" approach to the issue, and the fact that he felt all smug about his "research" makes it all the more funny! I will vote DA on this one...

Definitely Toss: Repeat
Sorry, but we've already received this story. Thanks anyway, and submit again!

As Candy said, it is a repeat, but after searching as Bruce suggested, I also agree it is to common! Thank you for submitting though!

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
This guy's complete lack of any common sense should be recognized. Mushroom dangers are widely published, yet his persistence to defeat Nature made me laugh. Sadly, though death by poisonous mushrooms is extremely unpleasant and he must have endured five days of absolute hell!
