The Fixed Gear Phenomena

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I hate fixed gear bicycles. They're slow, useless, cause traffic, and all I see is folks crashing on them. My friend Marty disagrees. He loves how it makes him feel "connected to the road." However Marty does agree how they are slow. He once decided to make his bike go faster. He decided to install one of them motorcycle engines to his bike. He went to the local scrap yard for his engine, but all he could find was a dirt bike engine. After installing it, which surprisingly worked, he decided to test it on a highway. He fired up the engine and headed off. He managed to hit about 50 (I was tailing him in my car) before he had to get his feet off the pedals, which were spinning too fast. he went about a mile before he decided to try to put his feet on the pedals again. His foot hit the pedal at the heel and he was sent flying into a shrub. He escaped with a shattered pelvis, which had destroyed his testicles, and a fracture to his skull.

Ouch! So does he now understand the concept of gear shifts, transmissions, etc? Thanks, John!
