Mumbai's Peeping Tom fails to hang

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

He won the trust of his employers doing a neat job of the domestic chores. However, he had one weakness: to peep into his employer’s bedroom at night. And to facilitate this desire, he slung a rope from the terrace, descended the precariously hanging rope and stopped outside the bedroom window of his employer’s 15th floor apartment. Luv Shankar Sahny had been doing it over and over again; but on Thursday, luck ran out on him.

Sahny, while “in the act”, lost his grip and fell to his death, much to the shock and dismay of his employers and their neighbours. Police said Sahny had been working for the past nine years and lived with the family in Gundecha Symphony Building, Veera Desai Road in Andheri (west).

In the wee hours of Thursday, his employer (name withheld to protect identity), a businessman, and his wife spotted somebody peeping into their bedroom from the window. Shocked, they assumed it was a thief. As a reflex, they yelled “chor chor” and screamed for help. Sahny was startled and lost his grip, resulting in the fall. He was rushed to Cooper Hospital but was declared dead before admission.

“Hearing the shouts, Sahny got scared and fell down,” said senior inspector Kailash Ghamande of Amboli police station.

When his employers rushed downstairs, they saw Sahny lying in a pool of blood. Though they were shocked with the incident, it did not surprise them. For, Sahny had been reprimanded by them in the past. However, it was perhaps a habit he could not control.

After gaining their composure, they rushed to the police station and registered a complaint. “At 4am, Sahny sneaked out of the house through the bathroom window, climbed up to the terrace and then tried to peep in through the bedroom window,” said Ghamande.

In their complaint, the employers stated that Sahny had the habit of peeping in. Though they tried to demand an explanation for his behavior, he would remain silent, apologise and promise not to repeat it. “He was even warned several times,” said police sub-inspector Sujit Kumar Gunjkar. The police found a rope hanging from the terrace.

We receive many stories about people falling from buildings. Usually they're drunk and it's a stunt, or they're locked out and desperate to get in. This one's different. He had successfully done it before, and was apparently warned, but just couldn't kick the habit. Besides, it's a classic cartoon visual! We'll see what my fellow mods think!
