Man killed in farm accident

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin/Wendy says, "Thanks for the submission, but this sounds like JUST AN ACCIDENT to me, an accidental death of a man who climbed into a machine that was OFF, and seemingly safe."
ORIGINAL SUBMISSION:

A man is dead after a farm accident near Treherne Friday morning.

A 32-year-old man was making repairs to a feed mixer at a hog production plant in the Rural Municipality of South Norfolk when he became trapped in the machine, RCMP said. The man died at the scene.

Portage RCMP confirmed that the accident happened at Fairholme Colony. The accident was reported to police at 8:30 a.m.

A witness to the accident told media the accident happened after the man jumped into the feed mixer to clean it.

"Yes, the guy just didn't push the emergency button and went into the mixer and I guess the computer decided it is the time of the day when they're going to mix feed and he was in there. His body was mutilated, I guess.

"We was in there about ten minutes, they figure."

The witness said the man's family is taking it hard, as he was engaged to be married in a month's time and his brother died recently due to a heart attack.

An investigation is being conducted by RCMP and Manitoba Health and Safety.

The man's name has not been released. http://www.carmanvalleyleader.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2712427

There was a button to push to make sure the machine did not go on and he didn't bother to push it!? What was he thinking? That the computer timer would prevent him from getting chewed? Note: Messy jobs ALWAYS take longer then you would think. For the push of a button... Thank you Sandra!

Unbelievable that he risked his life over a push of a button... Thanks, Sandra!
