marsh mellow boat in redoubt bay

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

my father and i were fishing in redoubt bay in alaska for salmon.one day after dinner we went to a small stream to fish. the stream is a meeting point for the salmon and thus a haven for bears. when we got close i saw a man in a small 1 person inflatable dinghy who had put himself, his wife and his 18 year old son on. i didnt give it much thought until a bear came down to the water. the bears are used to humans and leave us alone as long as we stay away from them. suddenly the bear swims up to the boat and grabs hold of a rope. thinking it is the anchor rope our guide runs to the front of the boat in case he has to save them. the bear dives under water, rips off a stringer of dead fish and swims away to eat them in safety. when we approached the man he not only said that was the second time it had happened to him but that he was going to keep fishing.

So a bear came within inches of them and their inflatable raft not once but twice because of the fish they'd caught, and they were intent on continuing to fish? Talk about idiots! One swipe of a claw from that bear and the raft would be shredded, not to mention the people on board. Thanks for the story, Jack!
