POLICE are investigating whether a man was electrocuted as he tried to take copper wire from under a house south of Melbourne early this morning.

Paramedics were called to the scene at a house set back from the Frankston Flinders Rd in Hastings on the Mornington Peninsula about 4.30am.

Authorities said the man was with three other men under the house when he received the fatal shock from live wires.

A mate desperately tried to pull him away from the source and was also shocked in the process.

Others there failed in their attempts to resuscitate him, as did the paramedics who arrived a short time later.

The other man who received a shock refused treatment.

Police are now investigating whether the man was trying to remove copper wire from the building when he was electrocuted.

His three companions are with police at the Hastings police station helping with enquiries about the incident.
