What a croc head

NADJA HAINKE

July 22nd, 2010

A FOOLISH tourist has been caught swimming right in front of a crocodile trap at a Top End waterhole where a large saltie has already been caught this year.

Tim Cotter photographed the fool in front of the trap at Koolpin Gorge, in Kakadu National Park.

The park was forced to close the pool after a 3.5m saltie was removed from the trap just after the wet season.

A warning distributed to all visitors of the permit-required area said: "Please be aware that crocodiles may enter the main pool at any time and may not be immediately detected." Mr Cotter, of Tiwi, took the photo while on a short camping stint about midday on July 8.

The occupational health and safety officer said he was shocked to find the man, believed to be in his 40s, swimming in the pool despite the closure.

"It was just unbelievable," he said.

"The guy in the photo was driving a vehicle with Victorian number plates - what a croc snack."

The photo follows a series of images published in the NT News showing thrillseekers near croc traps.

Two reckless idiots took the cake when they were captured inside a cage in December last year.

Another drongo hopped atop the floating trap - designed to capture 4m salties.

The photo angered rangers, who said people could be fined up to $1000 for damaging Parks and Wildlife property.
