Not A Yule Log

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Whilst I am aware that this is not a true Darwin Award I feel that it needs to be in the at risk survivors group, if only for the potential of taking the genes entirely out of the pool.

Last Christmas after the turkey and sprouts had been duly consumed my father was put in charge of bringing out the pudding. A traditional brandy soaked pudding courtesy of my Great-Aunt. My father decided that the brandy already in the pudding couldn't possibly burn well enough. Thus he decided that he would suppliment it with a large tumbler full of 75% a.b.v. (150 proof) rum, which our neighbour had brought back from the Carribean. To increase the ignition potential of this aleady potent liquor he decide that he would briefly heat the glass in the microwave.

The pudding was then doused with the combustable and ignited by my father with great aplomb. The resulting flame hit the ceiling some six feet above it and blew itself out. Not satfied my father then proceeded to try to reignite the pudding whilst pouring the remains of the rum over the pudding. This ignited not only the pudding but the rum still in the glass. My father the placed the palm of his hand over the mouth of the glass in an attempt to smother the flames. Unfortunately the alcohol continued to burn for a few seconds leaving my father with his hand vacuumed to the now very hot glass. He then struggled and freed his hand, showering the dinner table with flaming rum in the process. Luckily alcohol burns at too low a tempurature to ignite the cotton tablecloth. The whole adventure was put to an end when my step-mother doused everthing with the turkey bucket, my father is still not allowed near rum or lighters though.
